Hispanic Programs and Services

Barrington Youth and Family Services (BYFS) offers a variety of Hispanic programs and services. All Hispanic programs and services are led by the Spanish-speaking staff at BYFS. The programs are designed to offer services to the Spanish speaking community and are available to all residents of District 220.

The information below gives an overview of the programs currently offerred at BYFS. Specific dates for programs are available and new programs can be scheduled at the request of the community or groups. Hispanic Counseling and Groups

Services designed to support the Hispanic family include parent education training seminars, workshops, and support groups. Families needing additional counseling and services can always arrange to receive counseling in spanish. BYFS provides counseling for individuals, families, as well as couples.

The Hispanic program also includes other types of special programs such as those in Barrington Middle Schools, where activity and study groups are led by BYFS staff and high school volunteers who help teach and tutur Hispanic students. Also, families can participate in a Hispanic Literacy Program which uses high school volunteers to teach English to Spanish speaking individuals. This program is run through the volunteer program at Barrington High School in collaboration with an active volunteer from the community.


Hispanic Mentoring Program

The Hispanic Mentoring Program is a program run for Barrington High School students. The program consists of mentoring and support groups and is planned to include a Leadership group where students talk, learn and develop leadership qualities and skills. There is also a psychological and educational support group which guides students in their adjustment to th ehigh school educational and social cultures.

Hispanic Mentoring students participate in a variety of field trips through the U.S. Hispanic Leadership Institute. Students participate in the College Fair happenings and attend career days. In addition there are scheduled trips to museums, cultural centers and other Chicago areas of interest.
